Pretty Gift Box

(see also Creasing paper along curves)

Supplies: Two four inch by six inch index cards, compass with pencil and with two points available, 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of paper, cellophane tape.

First, place the 4” by 6” card on the sheet of paper, close to the middle of the sheet, and use a piece of tape to hold it in place. The pattern you are going to make on the card is shown below.

Place the card in “landscape” position, and draw a vertical line down the center, 2 inches from each edge, dividing it into two congruent rectangles. Extend the segment beyond the borders of the card, onto the white paper. Mark the center of the card. Place a pencil in your compass, and set the radius to 2 7/8 inches. Put the point of the compass on the center of the card and draw two arcs. They will cut the vertical borders of the card in four places, at one inch from the top and bottom on both sides.

Next, put two points in your compass, and again set the radius to 2 7/8 inches. Put one point on the line extending above the card, on the white paper. It should be approximately 1 1/16” above the card’s edge. Score an arc onto the card. It will be the mirror image of the arc you drew previously. Now put the point of the compass on the line extending below the card, on the white paper. As before, it should be about 1 1/16” below the card’s edge. Score an are onto the card.

Make another card just like this first one.

Cut along the penciled arcs on the two cards. Tape the sides together, and crease along the two curves on each card. Now you have your gift box!

You may experiment with cards and arcs of different sizes.
