Halloween Hat

From a square foot of poster board or construction paper you can make a great Halloween hat! (It is easy to make, and it can be used for other events as well, such as St. Patrick's day, Easter, or a birthday party, or just for dress-up!) You can decorate it and wear it! It may play a role similar to a mask, but it doesn't cover your face, so it doesn't block your vision. You fasten it with Scotch tape, and you need twine or ribbon or elastic for a chinstrap. You may need a "double strap" fastened to the hat in four (or only 3) places to keep it in position.

Supplies: 12” by 12” piece of poster board or construction paper; Scotch tape, scissors, ruler or French curves (optional), paper punch, string, yarn, ribbon, or 1/4 inch elastic for chin strap; markers or crayons, mirror (optional).

Start with a 12 inch by 12 inch square. Fold it horizontally and vertically into fourths so you have four thicknesses

With the folded edges at the top and on the right, draw a design beginning at the right edge fold and ending on the left edge. You can do this free hand or with French curves or with a ruler.

Now cut through all four layers, and you will get four symmetric curved lines.

Join the left and right edges of the front and back pieces with Scotch tape. Punch holes in the left and right sides of the hat, and string ribbon or yarn or elastic through to make ties.

Decorate, add a crest and any other decorations you want. Use markers or crayons to color it (optional). Now you have a hat!
